Wally's Prereleases: From 0 to 5!

Wally Bullard 1 year, 3 months ago

I was fortunate enough to play in 2 prereleases yesterday at Lake Geneva Games (and if you hurry you can play in the one at 1 oclock Sunday).  To save time I am going to just list my deck and my rares and go from there.

Post Innistrad Standard

Trevor Isham 1 year, 7 months ago

Innistrad is upon us and standard makes its annual massive change.  Mirrodin becomes the base set we are working off of and players are brewing like crazy.  What some people forget in this new land of brewing is that taking into account the metagame that will probably evolve is perhaps the most important step in identifying valid strategies.  With States so soon after this rotation choosing a deck that is good against the meta will be incredibly useful in giving you a great chance at winning.  Here are the most viable decks going forward that will shape the early meta ...

Sometimes You Just Open the Nuts and Run Perfect

Wally Bullard 1 year, 8 months ago

Excuse the formatting if it looks goofy. I'm trapped away from my desk and the all mighty wi-fi so I'm writing from my iPhone, poolside. Monday Night Drafts at Lake Geneva Games are kind of funny. They are $10 keep what you draft practice sessions with no prizes. But 3 packs for $10 is always a good deal. Sometimes you get 8+ people, sometimes no one wants to draft. Last night, there were 4 of us. With Kyle running a draft viewer camera (video coming soon) I sat down and opened pack one.  Since you will see the draft I won't go pick ...

Making Waves

Wally Bullard 1 year, 8 months ago

At about 5:45 PM on Sunday, I start to think if I feel like playing Bant Pod at the 6 PM Standard event at Lake Geneva Games.  Turns out I did not.  So I started to think about Genesis Wave.  I had emailed a list to Trevor that revolved around Dungrove Elder and Phantasmal Image.  This was instantly shot down.  Looking back, I was wrong, Trevor was right.  Just don't tell him.

I responded on Wally's post already but I thought I would share a few more thoughts on what I think is quickly going to become a Standard Staple planeswalker.

TCGPlayer $75 K Grinders and Why Pairings Get Me Every Time

Wally Bullard 1 year, 9 months ago

I traveled to Chicago to grind into the TCGPlayer $75K and am writing this on  the train back after the qualifiers ended.  Needless to say I was unable to get the 20 points I needed to qualify.  Let me tell you about my deck for the first grinder.

TCG Player 75k Tournament Report

Trevor Isham 1 year, 9 months ago

Wally, Trent, and I hit up the TCG Player 75k grinders this weekend in what turned out to be a futile attempt to grind in and win big money. While our eyes were set on the top prize we ultimately fell short for a variety of reasons that were mostly associated with inexperience with the format, some run bads, and meeting up with players much more experienced with us. I don’t want to steal anybody else’s content so I will just write briefly about my matchups. In the first grinder I opted to play Caw Blade (a combination of LSV’s ...

Standard Post Nationals

Trevor Isham 1 year, 9 months ago

There have been many times in the last few weeks where I had the first part of an article written about the dominance of UW Caw Blade but then every time I would run the deck against the UB version that I had built and I couldn't get Caw Blade to win even with perfect play from both sides. I figured it was an enigma and told a few people I thought the UB matchup was Caw Blade's worst, but still winnable. Fast forward to Nationals this past weekend and what do you know... A UB deck with very little ...
