We have a few tournament results in and are two weeks into the Brave New World of standard. This article is intended to act as a map through this new world. We will explore some of best decks and cards, some of the traps you can fall into, and ultimately what decks I will be sleeving up in the near future.
This weekend I played a fantastic sealed pool to a first place finish at Lake Geneva Games, however I was even more excited for my younger brother’s second place finish in the same tournament. (Apparently my breakers were slightly better than his.) He played really well in almost every game and it’s awesome to watch his game progress to higher and higher levels. I did see at least one other pool at the tournament that should have blown both of ours out of the water, but other than that I am well aware that my pool was about as good ...
I’ve spent a lot of time over the last few weeks dissecting the cards in Magic 2012 and I’ve had trouble coming up with a way to tell you what the best cards are. So I won’t, instead, here is the 20 cards that should not see play if you open them in your sealed pool. Take into consideration that there are exceptions to every rule, but probably not these.
After doing my daily catch up on all the authors I like to follow I have concluded that standard deck construction is actually just so amazing right now. It seems that the WOTC ban of Stoneforge and Jace was actually incredibly effective (again I think just Stoneforge would have been a better decision...). This Brave New World of standard is facscinating and makes me so very excited to play Magic right now.
